Out to Win

Out to Win is a documentary film that serves as an overview and examination of lives and careers of aspiring and professional gay and lesbian athletes from all over the world. Chronicling the present, framed within a historical context of those that came before, this film highlights the experiences of athletes who have fought and struggled, both in and out of the closet, to represent the LGBT community and their true selves. This film is told through the voices of pioneers, present day heroes, tomorrow's superstars and the people who've helped them succeed. Featuring interviews with trailblazers including Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, Jason Collins, Brittney Griner and more.

Documentary about LGBT athletes who are out. Interviews with athletes like Billie Jean King, Billy Bean, Martina Navratilova, David Kopay, John Amaechi, Jason Collins, Michael Sam, Brittney Griner. Interesting to hear how an athlete's sexual orientation was treated in the past vs in the present. It's an amazing evolution (compare Billie Jean King's experience of being blackmailed when she was closeted to Jason Collins, who received massive amounts of support when he came out). Also interesting to hear how an athlete's sexual orientation was treated depending on the sport they played and their gender. There's still room to improve in the sport world, but overall it's a heartwarming documentary about the advances that have been made when it comes to out athletes and the way they're treated by teammates, fans, and sponsors. (Small gripe: No interviews with women soccer players??)

I'm not a sports guy. I get that some people are, but it really isn't my tempo. That said, I was pleasantly surprised by Malcolm Ingram's 'Out to Win,' a documentary about out LGBT athletes, both in today's world and in historical context. Ingram's focus on the human element behind each of these athletes and their coming out stories had me hooked. Even more impressive was the timing of the documentary, with Jason Collins, Michael Sam, Brittany Griner, and other athletes making the news over the past year.

'Out to Win' finds the connective tissue between the pioneers of the LGBT movement in sports, the athletes currently making the news, and the up-and-comers paving a path to the future. To me, this is my favorite Ingram documentary since 'Small Tow Gay Bar,' primarily due to Ingram's strong voice and clear vision. Highly recommended.
